Trust God

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you”. Genesis 12:1 NLT

Have you ever wondered what made Abraham leave the familiar, everything he ever knew and go to an unknown place at the age of 75??! The more I read this scripture, I kept wondering what his thought process might have been after hearing what God was asking him to do…

Was he anxious and fearful of what this new place would bring and what would be required of him to thrive in this new environment?

Was he worried about the reaction and comments from people when he told them what he was preparing to do? Would they think he had completely lost his mind?

What assurances did he have that this new place was better than his situation at the time?

Or…was he just ready to just do what was asked of him?

Would he have wanted to go through it if it did not make sense?

The more I pondered on this, another individual who came to mind was Job. Contrary to the beliefs of people around Job that his experiences were of his own making; Job 1:8-12 actually tells us that the circumstances which came upon him were to test him and see whether he would still remain faithful to God. At one point, as the situation progressed, his own wife even told him to curse God and die (Job 2:9).

Abraham departed to the place God had instructed him and Job still blessed the Lord despite it all. “Why?” one would wonder. For Abraham, I believe it was because deep down he knew that where God was leading him was better than his current circumstances so he believed and trusted God. Job, on the other hand, teaches us the importance of remaining in the right posture in God despite whatever the challenges we might face, (Job 1:20-22).

Sometimes the experiences and challenges we face are a test allowed by God to reveal the state of our hearts. Proverbs 16:2 (NLT) says, “People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives“. When you get that dream job, house, money, spouse, business or whatever it may be that you have been asking God for, what will you do when you finally receive it? Will you still want to serve and seek God’s face like you did before?Or will you allow the blessing to become an idol in your life?

Perhaps it might be true that the things we struggle to let go of and put in God’s hands may be a revelation of the areas in our lives which are not totally surrendered to God. Go to God in prayer and ask him:

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” (Psalms 139:23‭-‬24 NLT)

When God reveals the state of your heart, act on it immediately. Also trust that His intentions for your life are always good, pure and right.
