God’s Timing

Abraham is known as the “father of faith” but if we are to be honest, his journey to get to this point was not an easy one. In fact, his journey had some mistakes along the way. I would like to bring one of these mistakes for discussion.

God made a promise to Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son. It was taking a while for this promise to come to pass so Sarah, similar to what we may potentially do to ‘help the situation’, offered her servant in the in hope of having a son through her. Sarah’s servant then gave birth to a son called Ishmael. However, as we read the story in Genesis 17, God’s plan was very clear; it would be Sarah who would give birth to this promised son who was to be named Isaac.

I would like us to stop and think about this for a moment… What led Sarah to this decision to seemingly reject the promise God made to both of them and take matters into her own hands? Why did Abraham go along with it and not remind Sarah of the promise God said to them? Could it be that perhaps this decision was taken as a result of impatience?

Looking at your own life, what are some of the decisions you are or have made in place of the promises of God because it looks like it is/was taking too long to come to pass? In these times, where are you directing emotions? Where are you going for counsel? If we are completely honest with ourselves, sometimes we do let these emotions get the better of us and get in the way of our faith.

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
    and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?
10 But I, the Lord, search all hearts
    and examine secret motives.
I give all people their due rewards,
according to what their actions deserve.” (Jeremiah 17:9 NLT)

Could it be that your seasons of waiting is because of the state of your heart and God is trying to expose the wrong motives you might have for desiring that thing; whatever it may be?

I want to encourage you to wait on God.Seek Him in Prayer and find out what you should be doing in this season of waiting.

Trust God’s timing…His timing is always right! 🙂
